Finding affordable car insurance can become much harder after a DUI, multiple traffic violations, an at-fault accident, or a license suspension. Drivers in these situations are often considered high-risk drivers, which means insurers may charge higher premiums or require special filings before providing coverage.
Understanding how high-risk insurance works can help you compare policies and avoid paying more than necessary. This article answers common questions about companies that insure high-risk drivers, DUI insurance costs, SR-22 and FR-44 requirements, and whether you can obtain an SR-22 without owning a vehicle.
Which Companies Insure High-Risk Drivers?
Several major insurance companies offer coverage to drivers with previous accidents, speeding violations, DUIs, or other driving-related issues. Availability and eligibility can vary by state, so a company that accepts one high-risk driver may not necessarily offer the same coverage to another.
Companies that may provide options for high-risk drivers include Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, and The General. There are also regional insurers and specialized providers that focus more heavily on drivers who have difficulty obtaining standard coverage.
When comparing companies, drivers should look beyond the monthly premium. Coverage limits, deductibles, required filings, discounts, cancellation rules, and state-specific requirements can all affect the total cost.
How Much Is Insurance After a DUI?
Insurance after a DUI is usually more expensive because insurers generally consider a DUI a significant risk factor. The exact increase depends on the driver’s state, age, driving history, vehicle, coverage level, and insurer.
For some drivers, premiums can increase substantially after a DUI, while others may see a smaller change. A DUI can also affect eligibility with certain insurers.
The cost may remain elevated for several years because insurance companies can consider driving violations when calculating risk. Shopping around after a DUI can therefore be especially important.
How Long Does a DUI Affect Insurance Rates?
A DUI may affect insurance rates for several years, but the exact period depends on state laws and the individual insurer’s underwriting rules. In many situations, insurers may consider a DUI for around three to five years, although some states or companies may use different periods.
The DUI may also remain part of a driver’s official motor vehicle record for longer than it affects insurance pricing. These are two separate issues.
Maintaining a clean driving record after a DUI can eventually help improve insurance options. As the violation becomes older, some insurers may place less weight on it when calculating premiums what is an insurance score?.
What Is the Difference Between SR-22 and FR-44?
SR-22 and FR-44 are financial responsibility filings used in certain situations involving higher-risk drivers. They are not traditional insurance policies themselves.
An SR-22 is commonly required after serious driving violations or license-related issues. It is used in many states to demonstrate that a driver carries the required amount of liability insurance.
An FR-44 serves a similar purpose but is associated primarily with Florida and Virginia. FR-44 requirements generally involve higher liability coverage limits than standard SR-22 requirements.
The exact requirements depend on the state and the circumstances that led to the filing. Drivers should check with their state motor vehicle department or insurance provider to determine which filing is required.
How Much Does SR-22 Insurance Cost Per Month?
An SR-22 filing itself is usually relatively inexpensive, but the insurance policy connected to it can be much more costly. The filing fee may be a small additional charge, while the larger expense comes from the higher insurance premium associated with the driver’s risk profile.
For some drivers, SR-22 insurance may cost significantly more than standard coverage. The monthly price can vary based on the driver’s location, age, vehicle, driving record, coverage limits, and reason for needing the filing.
Because rates differ substantially between insurers, comparing several quotes can make a meaningful difference. Drivers should also make sure the policy meets the minimum coverage requirements associated with their SR-22.
Can You Get SR-22 Without Owning a Car?
Yes, in many cases you can obtain an SR-22 without owning a vehicle. This is commonly handled through a non-owner car insurance policy.
Non-owner insurance generally provides liability coverage for someone who regularly drives vehicles they do not own. If the state requires an SR-22, the insurer can often attach the filing to the non-owner policy.
This option can be useful for someone whose driver’s license requires an SR-22 but who does not currently have a personal vehicle. However, non-owner insurance typically does not provide coverage for damage to the vehicle being driven.
Finding Affordable High-Risk Insurance
High-risk insurance does not have to mean accepting the first quote you receive. Comparing multiple insurers can help identify a more competitive premium while still meeting the required coverage limits.
Drivers with a DUI, SR-22, FR-44, accidents, or other violations should provide accurate information when requesting quotes. Leaving out a violation can create problems later and may result in coverage issues.
Over time, maintaining a clean driving record, avoiding additional violations, and reviewing insurance options regularly may help reduce costs. The most important step is understanding the specific requirements in your state and choosing coverage that satisfies them.
